NFLbreaking news:WATCH how Cooper DeJean’s Caitlin Clark warning was ignored by Patrick Mahomes and Chiefs…see more
Philadelphia Eagles rookie Cooper DeJean planned to break Caitlin Clark’s heart by beating the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX – and ended up scoring a memorable touchdown when intercepting Patrick Mahomes.
DeJean wrapped up his stunning rookie season with the Eagles by winning the Super Bowl, and the cornerback had a major impact in the championship game. DeJean’s 38-yard return touchdown came at a pivotal moment in the second quarter, and Philadelphia went on to comfortably beat the two-time defending champions.
Like Clark, who is now a WNBA star with the Indiana Fever, DeJean was at Iowa last season before going professional and was selected in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft. The two athletes remain close from their time on campus but were rivals heading into Sunday’s Super Bowl.
Clark is a Chiefs fan and told reporters ahead of the game that her loyalty remains with Kansas City despite her fellow Iowa alum playing for the Eagles. “I hope Cooper has a great game, but it’s my Chiefs all day long,” Clark said.
DeJean was then asked by Mirror US Sports for his thoughts on Clark’s comments, and the rookie laughed before replying: “She’s been a Chiefs fan for a long time, so that’s alright. I don’t blame her.”
The Eagles cornerback was then asked if he was looking forward to breaking Clark’s heart by beating the Chiefs at Super Bowl LIX. Smiling, he replied: “Hopefully we can.” Not only did the Eagles storm to a 40-22 win, DeJean left his mark on the game.
DeJean didn’t intercept a single pass this season until the Super Bowl when he picked off one of the greatest quarterbacks in the NFL. Although it was Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts who was awarded Super Bowl MVP, DeJean was leading the fan vote online.
DeJean stuck to his word after vowing to break Caitlin Clark’s heart
It was perhaps the greatest birthday possible for DeJean, who celebrated alongside running back Saquon Barkley as the Eagles duo turned 22 and 28, respectively. While DeJean stopped Clark from celebrating a third-straight Chiefs win, he did have some kind words to say about the women’s basketball star.
Clark was named Athlete of the Year by Time Magazine for 2024 after becoming the all-time NCAA points scorer, being selected first overall in the WNBA Draft, and leading Indiana to the playoffs for the first time since 2016. Clark continues to be the face of women’s basketball, and her Iowa alum said: “It’s been awesome.
“Getting to watch her in college and what she did. What she’s done for the women’s game is really special. I’ve told a lot of people this. I think she’s probably the most exciting player to watch right now in men’s or women’s basketball.
“Just the way she plays the game. She can score, she can pass, she can do it all. She’s taken women’s basketball to the next level.”
