Critics have questioned the timing of the announcement of Prince Harry’s new show – hours after his sister-in-law Kate shared her cancer update. We take a look back at other ‘unfortunate’ clashes

On Monday, details of Harry’s brand new Netflix show were revealed to the public. Titled Polo, the show will delve into the lives of professional polo players.

But royal fans were quick to note that the announcement was made less than two hours after Kate’s revelation that her chemotherapy treatment has finished.

It’s not the first occasion that the timing of a Sussex announcement has been called into question. Below we look at awkward clashes between announcements and events…

Trooping the Colour
Meghan Markle caused a stir back in June with an awkward announcement relating to her lifestyle brand, American Riviera Orchard.

On 14 June, Kate had released a personal statement giving an update on her health, three months after sharing her cancer diagnosis. And she shared the happy news that the following day she would make her long-awaited return to the public eye by attending the King’s birthday parade, Trooping the Colour.

But then, around six hours before Kate’s outing, one of Meghan’s celebrity friends announced two new products in her fledgling brand.

Nacho Figueras, professional polo player and close friend of Harry, used his Instagram Stories to share several images of a pot of raspberry jam and jar of dog biscuits from Meghan’s American Riviera Orchard brand. And critics were quick to question the timing of Nacho’s post – and the Sussexes’ involvement.

Book release
In May 2021, Meghan was again accused of “trying to upstage Kate” by announcing the release of her children’s book days before the Princess’s photography album was released.

The Duchess revealed she would be publishing The Bench, an illustrated story inspired by son Archie and husband Harry. But some pointed out the announcement came days before the publication of a photography book that Kate had been working on for a year.

The book, Hold Still, captured life in the UK under lockdown and the Covid-19 pandemic.

The first look at the controversial docuseries – which showed Meghan in tears – was released as the Prince and Princess of Wales arrived in Boston for the 2022 awards, their first visit since the Queen’s death.

Another move by the royal couple that raised commentators’ eyebrows was the fact that the second show in Harry & Meghan was released on 15th December, the same day as Princess Kate’s long-awaited Christmas carol concert.

Whether intentional or not, there was no doubt that docuseries went some way to overshadow the carol concert in terms of media coverage and public attention.

Ahead of the publication of his controversial memoir Spare, Harry sat down for interviews with ITV’s Tom Bradby and Anderson Cooper, for US channel CBS, in January 2023 – the day before the Princess of Wales’ 41st birthday.

In a series of accusations against his family, Harry claimed members of the royal family sought to protect their own reputation “to the detriment” of the Sussexes and that they were “complicit” in their “pain and suffering”. He also detailed the alleged tense relationship between Kate and Meghan.

While the interviews made global headlines, the official Royal Family’s social media channels posted a birthday wish for Kate, writing: “Wishing the Princess of Wales a very happy birthday.”

But the timing didn’t escape the attention of royal fans, with one tweeting: “I can’t believe Harry is doing this to Kate on the eve of her birthday…”
