The Princess of Wales was one of the first people to congratulate Carlos Alcaraz following his victory at Wimbledon 2024. And she shared some sweet words about her daughter Princess Charlotte as they met with the champion in the clubhouse following the match.
Kate had been on hand to present Alcaraz with the Wimbledon trophy on Centre Court and they later caught up behind the scenes, when she proudly introduced the nine-year-old. “This is Charlotte, [she was] cheering you on. You had everything crossed,” Kate revealed. Alcaraz, who was dressed in all-white and holding his trophy, replied: “Nice to meet you.” Kate then continued: “We’ve watched a lot on telly, so it’s great to finally get to meet you.”
Star-struck Charlotte looked slightly shy as she stood next to her mum, smiling at Alcaraz during their conversation, while her aunt Pippa Middleton stood behind and grinned at the interaction. It had been a big day for Kate and Charlotte. Wimbledon was only the second public engagement of 2024 for Kate, following the news of her cancer diagnosis in March. Weeks earlier, in June, she had stepped out for the first time to attend King Charles III’s birthday parade, Trooping the Colour.
As she arrived for the tennis, Kate – who has been royal patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club since 2016 – was given a standing ovation and a great cheer went out as she made her way to the Royal Box with Charlotte and Pippa. Karwai Tang, one of the photographers who caught Kate and Charlotte’s arrival on camera, later talked to People about the special moment.
“When [Kate] usually comes in, she walks down the steps and into her seat. She doesn’t normally stand and wave. But she stood for a while and took it all in. For her to acknowledge it and take in the applause was special,” Tang explained. “She seemed to look no different from the last Wimbledon. It felt like she is back. … For them to cheer and clap when they came in was a great support for her. Wimbledon had been waiting with bated breath for her to return, and she was back.” As for Charlotte’s surprise Wimbledon cameo, Tang added, “[Charlotte] skipped down the stairs and when she got back to her seat – she was laughing. She leaned over and must have told her mum what it was about, and they were giggling together and having a good old laugh.”
