dropped the College Football Playoff National Championship trophy while hosting Ohio State, his alma mater.
While the students winced at President Donald Trump’s inappropriate sexual innuendo, their vice president found himself in an embarrassing predicament before the eager eyes of the global media and the assembled team on the White House lawn. It comes after Vance sparked outrage with comments on China and made a big blunder on a recent visit to Greenland.
During the photo-op in the Rose Garden, senior running back TreVeyon Henderson, lauded for his three-time All-Big Ten track record, tried to hand over the trophy to Vance. Meanwhile, Trump, spotted at the center wielding the Buckeyes’ iconic helmet, watched on with a look of concern.
The trophy came apart during the exchange, leaving Henderson clutching its stem as a bewildered Vance leapt down to retrieve the base. The Ohio State players, seen in the periphery, immediately turned towards Trump, waiting for his reaction.
Miraculously, the trophy remained intact. After a beat, Vance gave up on the base, choosing to continue the ceremony with just the top part in his grasp.
NewsNation broadcast the incident live, with the anchor spotlighting the fumble: “Let’s just take this shot full for a moment and see what happens there, and oh, what did the Vice President drop over there? Did he drop the trophy?”.
“Oh, come on, Mr. Vice President! Just as we’re going to it live, JD Vance, who’s an Ohio State graduate himself by the way, class of ’09….never a dull moment… give the trophy back, Vice President, so you don’t drop it [again].”
This isn’t the first time a trophy has taken a spill in recent sports memory, nor is it the most disastrous. Remember when former Real Madrid ace Sergio Ramos dropped the 2011 Copa del Rey trophy from the top of a bus amidst their victory celebrations?
Ohio State defied expectations by clinching the national title, despite entering the college football playoff ranked eighth in a field brimming with formidable competitors.
The Buckeyes trounced No. 9 Tennessee 42-17 in the opening round, followed by a resounding 41-21 win over No.1 Oregon in the quarterfinals (also known as the Rose Bowl), where standout receiver Jeremiah Love racked up 187 yards.
In the semifinals, Ohio State narrowly defeated No. 5 Texas 28-14, paving the way for their ultimate triumph over No.7 Notre Dame with a score of 34-23, securing the program’s first national championship in ten years.
ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. predicts that quarterback Will Howard, who was involved in the infamous trophy drop, will be selected 41st overall by the Chicago Bears in the early rounds of the forthcoming 2025 NFL Draft.
