Breaking:Reason behind Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes’ iconic finger twitch…see more
NFL enthusiasts are still puzzled over why Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has a habit of twitching his fingers between plays, even after over 100 games into his career.
The 29-year-old is often spotted spreading the thumb and pinky finger on his non-throwing hand before making seemingly random motions with his ring, middle, and index fingers.
He does this while holding his hand high up level with his face before lining up under center. There were numerous instances of Mahomes making these gestures during the regular season, and it’s expected he’ll do the same against the Philadelphia Eagles at Super Bowl LIX.
While the quarterback hasn’t confirmed why he does this, there are several theories about what they could signal to his Chiefs teammates on the field. One popular theory suggests that Mahomes does it to signal his teammates to pick up the pace, indicating they should quickly huddle up and prepare for the next snap.
Another possibility is that he’s signalling head coach Andy Reid to hurry up and communicate the next play via the headset in his helmet. Or, they could be exercises to keep his fingers active and ready for the upcoming play, especially during cold winter games.
Alternatively, these movements might not have any hidden meaning; they could simply be habits or nervous ticks he has developed over his football career. However, these are not the only gestures he makes during games.
In a 2019 ‘Sunday Night Football’ matchup against the Chicago Bears, Patrick Mahomes threw a touchdown to Travis Kelce and famously counted out 10 on his fingers — a nod to being the No. 10 pick in the 2017 NFL Draft behind Bears’ quarterback Mitchell Trubisky.
The gesture put the Chiefs firmly ahead 17-0 by halftime. When quizzed about it, Mahomes played coy, saying, “I don’t know if there was necessarily a meaning,” and telling reporters, “I was just kind of in the moment and just enjoying it. … I was just out there having fun.”
Not long after, Mahomes struck again with a cheeky count to four post-touchdown, which he claimed marked his fourth touchdown that game. Yet, it also alluded to his No. 4 spot in the NFL’s top 100 players list, while the opponent team’s Lamar Jackson held the No. 1 rank from that same list.
With the Chiefs taking on the Eagles for a chance at history, fans can expect Mahomes to be fiddling with his fingers yet again.
