Bruce Willis’ wife Emma Heming Willis has been the primary caretaker of her husband since he received a devastating health diagnosis three years ago.
The Die Hard star was diagnosed with aphasia in 2022 and then, more specifically, frontotemporal dementia — a brain disease that affects a person’s personality, behavior and ability to speak — in 2023.
On May 3, Heming Willis took a trip down memory lane, looking at some old photos of her husband and their two daughters, Mabel and Evelyn, when she got very emotional.
“Walking down memory lane, looking at old photos,” she wrote on her Instagram Stories. “Laughing. Crying. Smiling. My heart is full and yet so broken. Both can exist.”
Just before, Heming Willis shared a little bit about the journey she’s been on to raise awareness for people with FTD and more specifically, to draw attention to the hardships faced by caretakers.
“There has been nothing greater than finding my community,” she captioned another post on her Instagram Stories on May 3. “People that understand the journey. It makes all the difference.”
Heming Willis also admitted that she’s “terrified” of public speaking, but she pushes herself because she feels as though she’s been given a duty to use her platform and her voice to help others. And, even though her husband has changed over the past couple of years, he still encourages her.
“In those moments when I want to allow my fear to stop me, I hear Bruce in my head, ‘You gotta get out of your own way, Emma,'” she captioned a photo of her and her husband.
In the wake of everything that she’s going through, Heming Willis decided to write a book aimed at helping others in the caretaker roll. “The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope and Yourself on the Caregiving Path” will be released on Sept. 9, 2025. The main message the book hopes to send is that “you are not alone.”
