Following Bianca Censori’s Grammy Awards completely sheer dress, award show ceremony dress codes have fallen into question.

The Academy Awards are known to be far more than just a night of glitz and glam. After all, the Oscars are meant to honor some of the biggest names in film based on artistic and technical merit. Decisions handed down by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences are largely considered to be one of the most meaningful accolades in the industry.

As such, stars typically dress to impress for the big night. While Bianca and Kanye West’s little stunt happened over at the music industry’s Grammy Awards, the Oscars might might not be safe from copycats, so its good to know what the rules are before the night kicks off.

However, the leaked memo also included some insight into the fashion expectations from the stars. The email advised attendees to aim for “Inspirational and Aspirational,” adding: “In actual words, formal is totally cool if you want to go there, but casual is really not.”

However, the more official “white tie” dress code dates back to the beginning with an official guidance penned in 1968 for the 40th Academy Awards.

In an note, organizers explained that “actresses are expected to wear formal evening gowns either maxi or floor length, preferably pastel shades since the setting is very formal and done entirely in white and gold.”

Additionally, it added that longer gowns are preferred to maintain the “dignity of this traditional affair.” They prohibited mini or day length dresses.

Plus, there was a clear gender distinction made, a note which is controversial by today’s standards. They said: “Men are expected to wear white tie with conventional formal evening accessories.”

This guide seemed to be reaffirmed in 2015 when the Academy posted it again to their website in a blog post. However, its exact message has not always been upheld and stars are often not barred from attending if they violate these rather loose and arbitrary rules.

After all, Kristen Stewart, in 2022, famously showed a little leg on the red carpet. While she faced some public backlash, she proceeded into the main event with no problem. Plus, Billy Porter shook up gender norms when he opted for a skirt to accompany his suit jacket at the 2019 iteration of the event.

So far, the Academy hasn’t laid down the law on an official 2025 dress code. Designers and celebrities will be left up to their own discretion to figure out where exactly the line falls.
