Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce were just one win away from making NFL history, but they couldn’t pull off the first Super Bowl three-peat as the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 in Super Bowl LIX.
The Chiefs couldn’t have gotten off to a worse start, allowing 34 straight points to the Eagles to begin the game. Mahomes was responsible for 14 of those points, throwing two interceptions in the first half. Kelce didn’t do much to help, recording zero catches through two quarters.
Coming into the game, rumors were swirling about Kelce’s potential retirement in the offseason. But the 35-year-old tight end isn’t quite sure just yet.
“I’ve thought about it, but I still love what I do,” Kelce said before the Super Bowl. “It’s moments like these, weeks like these, the month that we just had in the playoffs that make me feel like I could play this game forever. I think I still got a lot of football left in me. I think this year has been one of the most special years of my life. I think it’s gonna continue to make me want to do more in the football world.”
After the Super Bowl loss, Mahomes spoke to reporters on Kelce’s potential retirement, sending a strong message to his teammate of eight years.
“I know he still has love for the game,” Mahomes said. “He’ll get time to spend with his family and make that decision on his own. He’ll be welcomed back here with open arms.”
Mahomes finished the night completing 21-of-32 passes for 257 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions while adding another 25 yards on the ground. Kelce, on the other hand, added four catches for 39 yards.
Now, Kelce will enter the offseason with a tough decision to make. He still has one year remaining on his two-year, $34.25 million contract, which could help persuade him to come back for a 13th season. But if he retires, he could be a lock for the Hall of Fame in five years.
