Kanye West has opened up about his bipolar misdiagnosis, revealing his wife Bianca Censori is the reason why he eventually discovered he had a neurodevelopmental condition.

West, 47, who legally changed his name to ‘Ye’ in 2021, was initially diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2016, whilst married to his ex-wife Kim Kardashian, 44.

In his 2021 track ‘Yikes’, the star referred to his mental health condition as a ‘superpower’ and in the 2022 documentary series Jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy, the father-of-four revealed medication he was on to manage symptoms was causing him to gain weight.

However in a new interview, West has claimed he was actually misdiagnosed.

In an episode of Justin Laboy’s The Download, the ‘Runaway’ rapper began by explaining bipolar was something that was ‘put on’ him.

“They call it specifically bipolar, they put that on me they I said it so I put it on the album….I went to this doctor, one that works with Justin Bieber, one that work with I’m not even going to name other names and stuff,” he began.

“My wife [Bianca Censori] took me to do that because she said: ‘Something about your personality doesn’t feel like it’s bipolar. I’ve seen bipolar before’.

“She’s educated – so she says: ‘I’ve seen bipolar before’, and I’ve come to find it’s really a case of autism that I have.”

West went on to liken his experience of autism to that portrayed in the 1988 movie Rain Man, starring Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman.

The four-time Oscar-winning flick sees car dealer Charlie Babbitt (played by Cruise) learning his estranged father has died and left his fortune to an autistic-savant brother (Hoffman) he didn’t know existed.

“I’ve come to find out it’s really a case of autism that I have and autism takes you to a Rain Man thing where you’re like ‘Oh man I’m going wear this [Donald] Trump hat because I like Trump in general and then when people tell you to not do it you just get on that one point,” West explained.

“That’s my problem when fans tell me to do my album a certain way, I’ll do it the opposite way just because.”

The ‘Stronger’ hitmaker went on to say he understands his friends can sometimes find dealing with him ‘difficult’ and that he can’t have people ‘take control of his bank account’.

When asked if he is still on medication, West said: “I haven’t been taking the medication since I found out it wasn’t bipolar, that wasn’t the right diagnosis.”

Instead, the star said he tries to manage his autism by using things that don’t block his ‘creativity’.

West and Censori, 30, who married in December 2022, have recently been making headlines after walking the 67th Annual Grammy Awards red carpet in Los Angeles.

The pair caused a stir when Censori revealed she was wearing a sheer dress with no underwear underneath a longline fur coat.

While some have commented negatively on the Australian model’s controversial outfit, a source reportedly close to Ye said the moment was supposed to be ‘art’.

“People have called this a stunt but to Ye this is his art,” an insider explained.

“He turned up, made headlines around the world and left. No one told him what to do and even if they had, he wouldn’t have listened.

“Ye always planned to do the red carpet and leave – he’d never sit through the Grammys because it’s so dull and boring.”
