Tyler Perry’s incredible offer to Meghan Markle – made before he even met her Before Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex had ever met Hollywood mogul Tyler Perry, the filmmaker had already made her a seriously generous offer and he hasn’t hesitated to be there for the couple
In one of the most challenging moments for Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex amid their royal exit, there was one pretty unexpected person who swooped in to help them: Tyler Perry. The director and filmmaker famously offered the couple safe haven by giving them a place to stay and providing them with security, when the couple’s publicly funded police security had been removed.
This began a firm friendship, and Perry has even been made godfather to their daughter, Princess Lilibet. However, one surprising detail of the story of the Hollywood mogul’s generosity, was that he first extended an offer of help and support before he had ever even met Harry or Meghan.
The revelation that Perry had first made it clear he would be there for Meghan came from the Duchess herself in an interview with The Cut. The Duchess explained that the filmmaker had first contacted her and Harry around the time of their wedding in May 2018, offering them support if they should ever need it.
“Though Meghan had never met Tyler Perry in person, he had reached out when she and Harry got married to tell her that he was praying for her ‘and that he understood what this meant,’ Meghan recalls, referring to the symbolic weight of their wedding, ‘and that he could only imagine what it was like.’
“He also told Meghan to call if she ever needed support or advice. It took her a long time to do so, she admits. But once she did, she found herself telling him every detail of their situation in Canada. ‘Sometimes, you can tell your life story to a stranger on a plane as opposed to some of the people that are closest to you,’ she says.” The couple were in Canada when their police security was removed, and with the borders closing due to the Covid pandemic, and their location having appeared in the press, they were worried for the safety of their family.
They first revealed that Perry had offered them security and a place to stay in their bombshell sit down with Oprah Winfrey back in 2021, and the filmmaker appeared in their six-part Netflix documentary series. He took part in an interview for the series, during which it was revealed he only agreed to be Lilibet’s godfather if he didn’t have to go to the UK for a royal christening and he spoke strongly against the way Meghan and Harry had been treated during their tenure and exist as working royals. “To use the institution to try and do all the things a batterer would do, like, here’s what we’re gonna do, ‘we’re gonna cut off the money; we’re not gonna leave you security; we’re gonna do all those things to make you comply and come back,'” he said.
