JUST IN:Donald Trump’s ‘baffling’ answer when asked if he wanted to be President in ’80’s
Whatever your thoughts on his politics, President Donald Trump is one of the most talked about people in the world.
His Presidency has come with a lot of change, drama and divided opinion. But, an old clip of the President has caused people to wonder how he ever entered the world of politics in the first place.
An interview, said to be aired in 1980, shows Trump looking very different to how we see him now. As well as being a few decades younger, his views on the world seem to be totally different too.
It makes quite captivating viewing, and people have been left rather baffled by it. The clip was shared on TikTok, and it’s got a lot of people talking. They had all sorts of views on how things have come to change.
When asked if he would like to become President of the United States, Trump says: “I really don’t believe I would, your honor. But I would like to see somebody as a President who could do the job, and there are very capable people in this country.”
He goes onto say it’s a “shame” that a lot of men are afraid to go into politics. He also noted he thought the “most capable people” are not always the ones who run for office.
When asked why he wouldn’t run for political office, he added: “Because I think it’s a very mean life. I would love, and I would dedicate my life to this country, but I see it as being a mean life.
“And I also see it that somebody with strong views, and somebody with the kinds of views that are maybe a little bit unpopular, which may be right, but may be unpopular, wouldn’t necessarily have the chance of getting elected against somebody with no great brain but a big smile, and that’s a sad commentary for the political process.”
The video has been viewed thousands of times since it was shared, and people can’t believe how different Trump was back in the ’80s. It certainly got a lot of people talking.
The President shared a different view back in the ’80s
One person replied: “Little did she know she planted the seed that changed the world.” Another said: “Barron looks so much like him here.”
A third added: “It’s crazy to think that the man he was describing in 1980 would be the man he is in 2024.” Meanwhile, a fourth also commented: “It was never supposed to be a popularity contest.”
This week the President sent shockwaves around the world again. He confirmed a 25% tariff on all cars imported to the US.
The decision threatens to heat up a global trade war, especially if, as expected, other countries retaliate. It could have a huge impact on different parts of the world.
Trump has announced a blanket 25% tariff on all foreign-made cars, as well as certain automotive parts. At the moment, it’s thought the the levy hike will come in force from April 2 on cars and May on parts.
The biggest individual impact is on Mexico, which sent nearly 2.8 million cars to the US last year. However, the move will also hit manufacturers around the world.
Last year, the US imported roughly eight million cars, and nearly half of vehicles sold in the US are foreign. The value of those imports is thought to be around £186billion, but that rises to almost £370billion when parts are included.
