Speaking at an EU summit in Copenhagen, Meloni said:
“I continue to believe that all of this brings no benefit to the people of Palestine… On the other hand, it seems to me that it will bring many inconveniences to the Italian people.”
She also mocked unions for calling the strike on a Friday, suggesting they wanted “a long weekend and revolution.”
The remarks come after Israeli forces intercepted dozens of flotilla ships, carrying hundreds of activists, including around 40 Italians. The convoy had set out to challenge Israel’s maritime blockade of Gaza.
Italian unions say the strike – set for tomorrow – is a response to Rome’s failure to press Israel to allow unrestricted humanitarian aid into Gaza.
Protests have already taken place in several Italian cities, with more expected the day after.
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani told parliament that while Italy recognises Israel’s right to self-defence, its military operations in Gaza had “gone beyond self-defence and violated humanitarian law.”
